Patty Leal, SLP -CCC
Aloha, my name is Patty Leal, and I am the owner and practicing Speech-Language Pathologist at Total Communication Speech Therapy, proudly serving keiki and families in West Oʻahu. I earned my Master of Arts in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of Utah and my Bachelor’s degree in Communication Disorders from Utah State University. My experience includes working in private practice, elementary schools, community clinics, and a developmental diagnostic clinic.
My passion for communication began long before graduate school, while I was nannying infants and toddlers, and witnessing the many ways they expressed themselves—through gestures, signs, facial expressions, and emerging speech. Watching a child point to a cookie jar, sign “more,” and say “yummy” showed me that communication is about connection and meaning, not just spoken words. That moment shaped my belief that all forms of communication are valid and valuable.
Since then, I have seen firsthand the empowering impact of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), including speech-generating devices and language-based software. These tools can be life-changing for keiki who are still developing oral-motor skills, allowing them to express their thoughts, needs, and personalities. Supporting ʻohana as they learn to communicate and connect with their loved ones is one of the most meaningful parts of my work.
When I’m not providing therapy, you can find me snorkeling, hiking, and enjoying beach days with my kiddo—embracing the same sense of connection and joy that guides my work with families.
